Meningitis Claims Over 215 Lives In Zamfara


The Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in Zamfara, Prof. Abdullahi Shinkafi said meningitis has killed over 215 people in Zamfara in the last two months.

The SSG who is also the Chairman of the state's Committee for the Control of Meningitis added that the committee had created awareness on the disease by moblising different communities in the state through the Local Government Meningitis Control Committees.

The SSG said that additional 1864 cases had been recorded in the state since the outbreak of the disease.

Due to the outbreak of the disease, 1344 people have been trained as vaccinators and they been shared into 224 groups of 6 people each so as to enable them carry out the vaccination throughout the state.

Prof. Shinkafi said that Zamfara state government required 3 million dosages of meningitis vaccines but only got 300,000 from the federal Government.

According to Shinkafi, "We have to carefully prioritize the vaccination." He said that the vaccination would be concentrated on high density areas including key public institutions and schools to avoid further spread of the disease in the state.
