NLC Kicks Against Plan By Nigeria Customs To Collect Duties On Vehicles

Ayuba Wabba And Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd)

In the quest to reduce activities of smugglers, porous borders and also to generate revenue, the Nigeria Customs noss, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) gave directive that motor dealers snd private owners of vehicles whose customs duty has not been paid to do so between Monday, 13 March, 2017 and Wednesday, April 12, 2017.

He added, "There will be an aggressive anti-smuggling operation to seize as well as prosecute owners of such smuggled vehicles after the deadline of Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
But the President of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ayuba Wabba has opposed the directive by Nigeria Customs for car owners to pay duty on old vehicles. Mr Wabba said the directive is not realistic because this policy will create problem , suffering especially to the innocent end users of the vehicles.

Nigeria Customs have noticed that ever since the land borders have been shut down on importation of vehicles the activities of the smugglers have increased seriously thereby bringing in vehicles without Customs duty. In order to curb the excesses the directive was given by the Custom boss.
